1 Peter 1:17-19

Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Peter 1:17-19 NIV

Singing verses from Peter is always a challenge. He seems to delight in using as many connecting words as he can to create incredibly long and complex sentences!

A reoccurring theme in 1 Peter is the difference between things that will perish and things that will endure. Peter wants us to have a paradigm shift in the way we view life. Gold and silver are very valuable commodities, but not when you’re on a ship called Titantic that’s about to sink. In that case, a life boat is of far greater worth. We need to live in the present but keep the eternal in view. Is what we’re investing our time and effort into going to withstand the Father’s judgement?

Another ‘paradigm shift’ Peter presents to us is the concept of thinking of ourselves as strangers here on planet earth. This is not our final destination. We’re in transit and that also makes a big difference to the way we think and act.
